Job title: SEMH Teaching Assistant 

Location: Sheffield 

Salary: £460–£600 per week (depending on experience) 

Start Date: Immediate  

Contract Type: Long-Term/ Day-to-day, Full-Time / Part-Time

GSL Education South Yorkshire Branch are currently seeking a caring and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant (TA) to work with a school in Sheffield. This role offers the opportunity to support students who may experience social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, helping them build positive relationships and engage more confidently with school life. 

Responsibilities of an SEMH Teaching Assistant: 

  • Provide individual and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs. 

  • Help students manage emotions and respond appropriately to difficult situations. 

  • Encourage pupils to develop positive routines and constructive behaviours. 

  • Support engagement with classroom activities and learning tasks. 

  • Build trusting relationships while maintaining clear professional boundaries. 

  • Work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to respond to individual needs. 

  • Share relevant observations about pupils' progress, behaviour and engagement. 

Requirements for the SEMH Teaching Assistant (TA) role: 

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs is desirable. 

  • Experience in education, childcare, youth work or a support-based environment would be beneficial. 

  • A patient, empathetic and consistent approach. 

  • Confidence supporting students who may display challenging behaviour. 

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills. 

  • Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure. 

  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate on the Update Service, or willingness to apply. 

  • A good understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
