Make a Difference Every Day: Behaviour Support Worker – Wakefield SEMH School
Location: Wakefield
Pay: £115–£135 per day
Hours: 8:15am – 3:30pm
Contract: Long-term supply, with the opportunity to become permanent
We are looking for a Behaviour Support Worker to join an SEMH school in Wakefield, supporting young people with social, emotional and mental health needs.
This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is patient, resilient and passionate about helping young people succeed.
Your Responsibilities
- Build strong, positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support where required.
- Help pupils re-engage with learning following periods of dysregulation or challenging behaviour.
- Work alongside teaching and pastoral staff to implement individual behaviour and support plans.
- Encourage positive behaviour and celebrate pupils’ progress.
- Support pupils throughout lessons, social times and the wider school day.
- Use appropriate de-escalation and behaviour management strategies.
- Maintain a calm, consistent and positive approach, even in challenging situations.
- Help create a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for all pupils.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for someone who is resilient, patient, compassionate and consistent.
Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, SEND or within a specialist education setting would be highly beneficial. We would also consider candidates with relevant experience in youth work, residential care, mentoring, sports coaching or support work.
Most importantly, you will:
- Build relationships based on trust and respect.
- Remain calm and professional under pressure.
- Understand that behaviour can often be a form of communication.
- Set clear and consistent boundaries.
- Work confidently as part of a wider team.
- Be committed to helping pupils make positive changes.
- Be willing to learn and develop your understanding of SEMH and behaviour support.
