Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Sheffield
Pay Rate: £460 - £600 per week (depending on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract: Full-time/ Part-time, Day-to-day/ Long-term

GSL Education South Yorkshire Branch are recruiting compassionate and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant (TA) to join schools in Sheffield. We are looking for individuals who can establish trusting relationships with students, recognise the impact of Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, and provide structured support that encourages greater participation and independence.
As a Social, Emotional and Mental Health TA, youwill support learners experiencing social, emotional, or mental health difficulties, helping them navigate challenges while developing self-regulation, positive relationships, and more effective approaches to learning.
SEMH Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:
- Provide individualised assistance to young people with varying SEMH needs
- Recognise signs of emotional distress, frustration, or disengagement and respond appropriately
- Deliver targeted activities that strengthen confidence and emotional regulation
- Reinforce consistent routines and boundaries throughout the school day
- Monitor changes in wellbeing, behaviour, and engagement with learning
- Work alongside teachers, pastoral teams, and specialist staff to implement agreed support strategies
SEMH Teaching Assistant Requirements:
- Understanding of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and their impact on education
- Experience within SEND, education, care, mentoring, or youth work is desirable
- Confidence responding calmly and constructively to challenging situations
- Ability to build rapport while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
- Patient, resilient, and adaptable approach to supporting young people
- Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)
