Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Sheffield
Salary: £460 – £600 per week (depending on experience and qualifications)
Contract Type: Long-term / Temporary, Full-time / Part-time

Are you patient, supportive and confident when working with young people who may need additional emotional or behavioural support? A welcoming secondary school in Sheffield is seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to help pupils engage positively with school and their learning.
About the Role:
As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will provide classroom-based support to students who may experience social, emotional or mental health needs. You will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to help pupils manage behaviour, build confidence and remain engaged with their education.
Your day may include one-to-one or small-group support, helping students regulate their emotions, encouraging positive behaviour and assisting with learning activities. A calm and consistent approach will be important in creating a safe and structured environment for pupils.

Responsibilities:

Provide classroom-based support to students with SEMH needs.

Support pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour and engagement.

Work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to implement appropriate support strategies.

Build positive and professional relationships with students.

Encourage pupils to participate in lessons and develop greater independence.

Support individuals and small groups with their learning where required.

Maintain a calm, safe and structured classroom environment.

Share relevant observations and feedback with teaching and pastoral staff.
Requirements:
-
Previous experience working with children or young people is desirable.

Experience supporting SEMH, behaviour or additional needs is advantageous.

A calm, patient and resilient approach.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Confidence in managing challenging behaviour appropriately.

Ability to establish positive relationships while maintaining clear boundaries.

A genuine commitment to helping young people overcome barriers to learning.

Have the right to work in the UK.

Have an up-to-date CV with two relevant references from within the last two years.

Have an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service or be willing to apply for one through GSL Education.
Please be advised that this role requires a strong knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection and that successful applicants must satisfy all background safer recruitment checks including providing an enhanced DBS certificate registered on the update service, or completing an application for a new check.
