Job Title: SEN Teaching Assistant
Location: Durham
Pay Rate: £95 - £115 per day (depending on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract: Full-time/ Part-time, Day-to-day/ Long-term

Could you provide the individual support that helps children with Special Educational Needs feel included, understood, and confident in their learning?

GSL Education Newcastle Branch are seeking patient and committed SEN Teaching Assistant (TA) to support inclusive schools in Durham. We welcome individuals who can recognise different learning needs, build positive relationships with pupils, and provide practical assistance that enables children to participate more fully in school life.

The SEN Teaching Assistant works alongside teachers and specialist staff to reduce barriers to learning, encourage independence, and ensure pupils receive support appropriate to their individual needs.

SEN Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Assist individual pupils with learning activities tailored to their specific needs
  • Facilitate small-group sessions to reinforce classroom learning and key skills
  • Adapt resources and tasks to make lessons more accessible
  • Encourage communication, social interaction, and greater independence
  • Observe pupil progress and share relevant information with teaching staff
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment

SEN Teaching Assistant Requirements:

  • Experience working with children or young people with additional needs
  • Understanding of Special Educational Needs (SEN) and barriers to learning
  • Ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with pupils
  • Confidence responding patiently to different learning and behavioural needs
  • Good communication, teamwork, and organisational skills
  • Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)
