Learning Support Assistant – SEN

Location: Northumberland
Salary: £90–£120 per day (dependent on experience)
Start Date: September 2026

A welcoming and inclusive school in Northumberland is seeking a dedicated Learning Support Assistant – SEN to join their team. This Learning Support Assistant – SEN role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs and helping them overcome barriers to learning.

The successful Learning Support Assistant – SEN will work closely with teachers, the SENCO and wider support staff to provide tailored 1:1 and small-group support. You will help pupils develop confidence, independence and positive relationships while supporting their academic, social and emotional development.

Key Responsibilities of the Learning Support Assistant – SEN:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEN.

  • Supporting pupils with ASD, ADHD, SEMH and other additional needs.

  • Assisting with individual support plans and targeted interventions.

  • Supporting pupils with their learning, communication and social development.

  • Promoting positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing.

  • Using appropriate behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.

  • Adapting learning resources to meet individual pupil needs.

  • Working closely with teachers, the SENCO and wider support staff.

  • Helping to maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

The Ideal Learning Support Assistant – SEN Will:

  • Have previous experience working with children or young people with SEN.

  • Have experience supporting pupils with additional learning, behavioural or emotional needs.

  • Be patient, caring, resilient and adaptable.

  • Have strong communication and relationship-building skills.

  • Be confident providing 1:1 and small-group support.

  • Experience supporting pupils with ASD, ADHD, SEMH or behaviours that challenge would be highly advantageous.

  • Previous SEN Teaching Assistant or HLTA experience would be an added advantage.

  • Hold an enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or be willing to apply).

  • Have a fully checkable work history.
