Job Title - Cover Supervisor
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Contract: Full-Time, Part-Time, Temporary, Supply
Start Date: September 2026 or sooner
Salary: £102 – £120 per day

GSL Education are currently seeking enthusiastic and reliable Cover Supervisors to work in secondary schools across York and the surrounding areas. This opportunity is based in a supportive and inclusive secondary school setting that places a strong emphasis on student achievement, personal development, and high standards of learning.

As a Cover Supervisor, you will manage planned absence requests and day-to-day absences of teaching staff by supervising classes and delivering pre-prepared work. You will play a key role in ensuring students remain engaged, focused, and productive during lessons. This role does not involve planning lessons, preparing teaching materials, or assessing students' work, making it an excellent opportunity for graduates, aspiring teachers, or experienced education professionals looking to develop their classroom experience.

Main Responsibilities as a Cover Supervisor:

  • Supervise whole classes during the short-term absence of teaching staff.
  • Deliver pre-prepared lesson materials and ensure students remain on task throughout the lesson.
  • Manage classroom behaviour in accordance with school policies and expectations.
  • Support students in completing assigned work and encourage active participation in learning.
  • Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Manage planned staff absences and respond effectively to day-to-day cover requirements.
  • Record attendance and report any behavioural, safeguarding, or welfare concerns.
  • Liaise with teaching staff and school leaders regarding lesson outcomes and student engagement.
  • Uphold school policies and contribute to maintaining high standards of behaviour and achievement.

Cover Supervisor Minimum Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with young people in an educational, coaching, mentoring, youth work, or support setting is desirable.
  • Strong classroom management and behaviour management skills.
  • Confidence in supervising groups of secondary-aged students independently.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and adaptable in a dynamic school environment.
  • A proactive and positive approach to supporting student learning and wellbeing.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one).
