Job Title: SEMH Teacher

Start Date: September 2026 or sooner
Salary: £32,916 – £51,048 per annum*

GSL Education are currently looking for a committed SEMH Teacher to work within a specialist secondary school setting in York. This is a long-term opportunity to support students with social, emotional, and mental health needs, helping them re-engage with education and achieve positive outcomes.

As an SEMH Teacher, you will play a key role in creating a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment where pupils feel supported, valued, and encouraged to succeed both academically and personally.

Core Responsibilities of SEMH Teacher:

  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons tailored to individual learning needs.
  • Support students with SEMH needs in managing behaviour and emotions positively.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and structured classroom environment.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils to encourage progress and confidence.
  • Work collaboratively with support staff, pastoral teams, and external professionals.
  • Monitor student progress and adapt teaching strategies where required.
  • Promote positive behaviour, resilience, and emotional wellbeing across the classroom.

Essential Requirements as an SEMH Teacher:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS/QTLS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH or additional needs in a school setting.
  • Strong behaviour management and classroom management skills.
  • Patient, adaptable, and empathetic approach to teaching.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • Commitment to supporting students with diverse educational and emotional needs.
  • An enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one.
