Job Title: Speech and Language Specialist
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Contract: Full Time, Term Time Only

Start Date: September 2026 or sooner
Salary: £92 – £115 per day

GSL Education are currently hiring a dedicated and compassionate Speech and Language Specialist to join a supportive specialist educational setting in York.

As a Speech and Language Specialist, you will play a key role in supporting pupils with a range of speech, language, and communication needs. You will work closely with teaching staff, therapists, and pastoral teams to deliver targeted interventions that help children develop essential communication skills, build confidence, and engage more effectively in learning.

About the Setting:

The setting provides a highly supportive, structured, and nurturing environment for pupils with complex learning needs, including communication and interaction difficulties. Staff work collaboratively to ensure each child receives tailored support, enabling them to make progress academically, socially, and emotionally while developing independence and confidence.

Main Responsibilities as a Speech and Language Specialist:

  • Deliver targeted speech and language interventions tailored to individual pupil needs.
  • Support pupils in developing communication, language comprehension, and expressive language skills.
  • Work closely with teaching staff and external professionals to implement personalised support plans.
  • Use a range of communication strategies, including visual supports and alternative communication methods where appropriate.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, adapting interventions as required.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all pupils.

Requirements of Speech and Language Specialist:

  • Previous experience supporting children with speech, language, or communication needs is highly desirable.
  • Relevant qualification or training in speech and language support or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of SEN and primary-aged learners with additional needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach.
  • A strong commitment to safeguarding and child protection.
  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for a new one).
