SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Salary: £90–£120 per day (dependent on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract Type: Full-Time / Flexible

A supportive and specialist school in Newcastle upon Tyne is seeking a resilient and dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team. This SEMH Teaching Assistant role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs.

The successful SEMH Teaching Assistant will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to support pupils who may struggle in a mainstream learning environment. As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will provide 1:1 and small group support, helping pupils manage their emotions, behaviour and engagement with learning.

Key Responsibilities of the SEMH Teaching Assistant:

  • Providing 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs.

  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and behaviour strategies.

  • Promoting positive behaviour and engagement in the classroom.

  • Assisting teachers with lesson preparation and classroom activities.

  • Supporting pupils who may present behaviours that are challenging.

  • Helping to create a safe, structured and supportive learning environment.

The Ideal SEMH Teaching Assistant Will:

  • Have previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs.

  • Be patient, resilient and empathetic in their approach.

  • Have strong behaviour management and communication skills.

  • Be confident building positive relationships with pupils and staff.

  • Hold an enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or be willing to apply).

  • Have a fully checkable work history.
