SEMH Teaching Assistant

GSL Education is seeking a confident and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Lincoln on a full-time, permanent basis. This role is ideal for individuals with experience in care or similar support settings who are passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning caused by social, emotional and mental health needs.
About the Role:
You will support pupils with SEMH needs, many of whom may present challenging behaviours, low self-esteem, trauma-related difficulties or anxiety. Your role is to provide consistency, emotional support and structured guidance, helping pupils regulate their emotions and re-engage positively with their education.
What We’re Looking For:

Previous experience in care or a related support role is essential (e.g., residential care, mental health support, youth work, alternative provision).

Resilience, patience and a calm, adaptable approach when working with pupils during moments of dysregulation.

Availability to work full-time, Monday to Friday, at a school in Lincoln.

Strong relationship-building skills and confidence using positive behaviour and de-escalation techniques.

A genuine commitment to safeguarding and supporting vulnerable young people.
Key Responsibilities:

Providing 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH needs.

Using de-escalation and trauma-informed strategies to support emotional regulation.

Encouraging pupils to build confidence, resilience and positive coping strategies.

Supporting teachers by adapting tasks and learning activities to meet individual needs.

Helping maintain a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment.

Working collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams and external professionals.
