Are you passionate about supporting young people to overcome barriers to learning?

Do you have a calm, confident approach and the ability to de-escalate challenging behaviour?

GSL Education are currently recruiting for a dedicated Behaviour Support Assistant to join the pastoral team of a welcoming and inclusive secondary school in Eastleigh starting September 2025 or October 2025, depending on notice period. This is a full-time role designed to help students who have been removed from class due to behaviour concerns and to support those with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is resilient, empathetic, and genuinely committed to supporting pupils with complex emotional and behavioural needs. A permanent contract is on offer following a successful probation period, with the chance to move through pay grades as you gain experience.

Responsibilities of a Behaviour Support Assistant:

  • Provide day-to-day support to students in the school’s internal exclusion or reflection room
  • Work closely with the pastoral team to implement behaviour intervention plans and strategies
  • Support students with SEMH needs in a one-to-one or small group setting
  • Help students re-engage with learning following behavioural incidents
  • Encourage positive behaviour and emotional regulation using a restorative approach
  • Liaise with teaching staff to understand learning targets and barriers for students
  • Monitor and record student progress and behavioural incidents accurately
  • Contribute to the development of individual support plans and risk assessments
  • Provide mentoring and emotional support for students facing personal challenges
  • Foster a safe, calm, and structured environment conducive to behaviour improvement

Behaviour Support Assistant Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with young people with challenging behaviour or SEMH needs
  • A strong understanding of behaviour management strategies in educational settings
  • Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • A collaborative approach to working with staff, parents, and external professionals
  • CACHE Level 2/3 in Teaching Assistant or Childcare or similar is desirable but not essential.
  • Have an up-to-date CV (covering the last ten years, barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one)

Why Join GSL Education?

  • Work with an ethical and independent agency dedicated to education
  • Ongoing support from a dedicated consultant
  • Clear opportunities for professional growth and development
  • Chance to secure a permanent contract and progress within the school’s structure

Please be advised that this role requires a strong knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection and that successful applicants must satisfy all background safer recruitment checks; including providing an enhanced DBS certificate registered on the update service or completing an application for a new check.
