SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA) - Portsmouth, Hampshire

A welcoming secondary school in Portsmouth is looking to appoint a full-time SEN Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming school from September 2025. A permanent contract is available following a successful probation period, with opportunities to progress and increase your salary as you grow in the role.
This role involves working closely with students who have Autism and Learning Difficulties, supporting their learning, communication, and wellbeing in a structured and inclusive environment. This is to work in the school’s resource base, which caters for students with Autism and Learning Difficulties. Happy to consider people from the care background who have SEN experience.
Responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 and small group support to students with autism and learning difficulties in the school’s resource base.
- Assist with daily learning activities, encouraging independence, engagement, and communication.
- Work closely with teachers and the SENCO to deliver tailored support plans.
- Use a range of strategies to support sensory, emotional, and behavioural needs.
- Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
- Monitor progress and help students develop confidence, skills, and self-esteem.
Requirements:
- Experience working with young people with SEN, particularly Autism and/or Learning Difficulties – essential.
- Background in care or support work with transferable skills – highly valued.
- Patient, empathetic, and proactive approach.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to learn and grow within an SEN environment.
- Have an updated CV and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
