SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Rotherham
Salary: £86 – £100 per day (Depending on Experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract Type: Day-to-Day / Long-Term; Full-Time / Part-Time

GSL Education are seeking a dedicated and empathetic SEMH Teaching Assistant to support students in schools across Rotherham. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are passionate about inclusive education and want to make a real difference in the lives of children requiring additional emotional and behavioural support.
About the Role:
As a SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA), you will work closely with teaching staff, SENCOs, and pastoral teams to support pupils with SEMH challenges, helping them to engage in their learning and make progress both academically and personally. You will assist in managing behaviour, implementing support strategies, and creating a safe and structured environment where all pupils can thrive.
Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:
- Provide tailored 1:1 or small group support to pupils with SEMH needs
- Promote a calm and nurturing atmosphere to help manage challenging behaviours
- Implement strategies from behaviour plans, IEPs, or EHCPs to support individual pupils
- Support pupils in developing their social and emotional skills
- Encourage positive attitudes towards learning and school
- Work alongside teachers and school staff to ensure inclusive access to the curriculum
- Track pupil engagement and provide feedback on progress
- Build trusting relationships with pupils, acting as a positive role model
- Help maintain a safe and respectful learning environment
- Support children during unstructured times such as break and lunch if required
What we need:
- Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs as an SEMH TA or similar is highly desirable
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Level 2 or 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or equivalent) is desirable but not mandatory
- A degree in Psychology, Counselling or a similar field is desirable but not mandatory
- A calm, empathetic, and resilient approach
- Understanding of strategies used to support behaviour and mental well-being
- Ability to remain professional and consistent in challenging situations
- Have an updated CV and an Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)
