SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Hull
Salary: £89 - £105 per day (Depending on Experience)
Start Date: Immediate or September 2025
Contract Type: Day-to-Day / Long-Term; Full-Time / Part-Time

If so, GSL Education are seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to support children and young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in schools across Hull. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is patient, resilient, and keen to help students overcome barriers to learning in a supportive school environment.

About the Role:

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA), you will work closely with students who require emotional support and behaviour guidance throughout the school day. You will support them academically, socially, and emotionally, building strong relationships and helping to create a nurturing and structured learning atmosphere.

Responsibilities of a Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) TA:

  • Support students with SEMH needs on a one-to-one or small group basis
  • Help implement individual behaviour plans, risk assessments, and emotional support strategies
  • Promote a calm and supportive learning environment through consistent boundaries and routines
  • Encourage and model appropriate social behaviour and emotional regulation
  • Collaborate with class teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff to support pupil progress
  • Support classroom learning, helping students stay engaged and on task
  • Monitor student behaviour, mood, and engagement and report concerns where appropriate
  • Build trusting relationships with students to promote self-confidence and resilience
  • De-escalate challenging behaviour using positive behaviour management strategies
  • Uphold safeguarding, health and safety, and equal opportunity policies at all times

SEMH Teaching Assistant Requirements:

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviours as a SEMH Teaching Assistant
  • A degree in Psychology, SEND, Counselling or a similar field.
  • Relevant qualifications such as CACHE Level 2/3, NVQ, or equivalent (desirable but not essential)
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Resilience, patience, and a non-judgemental attitude
  • A genuine passion for supporting young people’s emotional wellbeing and academic development
  • Have an updated CV and an Enhanced DBS registered to the update service or willingness to apply for one
