Facilities Technician
Location: Hackney
Salary: £28,373 – £32,262 per annum (Depending on Experience)
Start Date: July 2025
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
Are you an experienced Facilities Technician seeking a new and rewarding opportunity in a school setting?
If so, GSL Education are currently seeking a proactive and dedicated Facilities Technician to join a vibrant and high-achieving secondary school in Hackney. This is a full-time, permanent opportunity beginning in July 2025, ideal for a candidate with a strong background in facilities, site maintenance, or building management in an educational or public sector environment.
As a Facilities Technician, you will play a key role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming school environment for students, staff, and visitors. You will work under the direction of the Site Manager or Facilities Manager and ensure the school grounds, buildings, and equipment are fully functional, clean, and compliant with health and safety regulations.
To be a Facilities Technician, your responsibilities will be:
- Carry out day-to-day maintenance, minor repairs, and general caretaking duties across the school site.
- Ensure that the building is clean, secure, and safe at all times, including unlocking and locking the premises as required.
- Conduct regular checks on fire alarms, emergency lighting, and other health and safety systems, maintaining accurate records in line with school policies and regulations.
- Support with the setup of furniture, equipment, and rooms for events, exams, and school functions.
- Carry out basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and decorating tasks when required or liaise with contractors for more complex repairs.
- Assist with site security during term time and school holidays, including monitoring CCTV (if applicable) and handling alarm systems.
- Ensure compliance with statutory checks, including legionella testing, PAT testing coordination, and risk assessments for building safety.
- Monitor and manage the school’s heating, lighting, and waste management systems to promote environmental sustainability.
- Maintain a clean, well-organised workspace and safely store tools, supplies, and chemicals according to COSHH regulations.
- Report safeguarding or maintenance concerns promptly and liaise effectively with the senior leadership team.
Requirements for Facilities Technician:
- Previous experience as a Facilities Technician in a facilities or site maintenance role, preferably within a school or similar public building.
- Working knowledge of health and safety regulations applicable to schools, including manual handling, COSHH, and fire safety.
- Strong practical skills in basic repairs, general maintenance, and equipment handling.
- A flexible and proactive approach to work with the ability to manage time and prioritise tasks effectively.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a courteous and professional attitude.
- A recognised facilities or health & safety qualification (e.g., IOSH or equivalent) is desirable but not essential.
- An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service or willingness to apply for one.
