Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant (Primary)

Location: Southampton | Key Stages: 1 & 2 | Hours: Part Time | Sector: SEN Support

GSL Education are currently seeking a caring and dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join a forward-thinking primary school in Southampton, supporting pupils across Key Stages 1 and 2. SEN Teaching Assistant Role Overview

As a SEN Teaching Assistant (TA), you will play a key role in supporting pupils with a range of additional needs, helping them to access learning, engage in school life, and achieve their full potential.

Your day-to-day duties will include:

  • 1:1 and Small Group Support: Providing tailored support to pupils with special educational needs, including those with learning difficulties, autism, speech and language needs, or emotional and behavioural challenges.
  • In-Class Assistance: Supporting the class teacher by helping to adapt learning activities to meet individual needs.
  • Nurturing Relationships: Building trust and positive working relationships with pupils to encourage confidence, communication, and independence.
  • Collaborative Working: Liaising with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to implement effective support strategies.
  • Progress Monitoring: Observing and recording pupil progress and reporting to the teaching and SEN team.

Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Some experience working with children, ideally in a primary or SEN setting (school, nursery, youth work, etc.)
  • A kind, patient, and supportive approach to working with young children.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team.
  • A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs.
  • Relevant qualifications or training in SEN support (desirable but not essential).
