GSL Education are looking to appoint a committed and empathetic SEMH Teaching Assistant in Hull to support students with a range of social, emotional and mental health needs. This role involves working closely with teaching staff and the school’s pastoral team to help students feel safe, respected, and supported in their learning.

Role Overview:

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA), you will be working on a one-to-one basis or with small groups of students, supporting both their academic progress and emotional well-being. Your calm approach, ability to build trust, and proactive attitude will be essential to helping pupils stay engaged and reach their full potential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students with SEMH needs in managing their emotions, behaviour, and learning.
  • Build positive relationships to provide consistency, encouragement, and reassurance.
  • Help students access the curriculum by offering tailored and flexible support.
  • Work closely with teachers and external professionals to implement EHCPs and behaviour plans.
  • Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Monitor progress and contribute to regular reviews of pupils' targets and strategies.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience working with SEMH students in a school or alternative provision setting.
  • A strong understanding of behaviour management strategies and experience implementing de-escalation techniques.
  • A compassionate and patient approach, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students.
  • A relevant qualification in education, psychology, youth work, or counselling (desirable but not essential).
  • A caring, patient, and resilient nature with the ability to handle challenging behaviour calmly.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to foster positive relationships.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
