Full-time SEN Teaching Assistant – Portsmouth, Hampshire

GSL Education are pleased to offer a full-time SEN Teaching Assistant role at a supportive secondary school in Portsmouth. The position is available for an immediate start or from September 2025, depending on the successful candidate’s availability. The role offers an annual salary between £17,500 to £19,000, depending on experience. This is a fantastic opportunity to support students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) in a specialist resource base, catering to students with Autism, Learning Difficulties, and Speech and Language needs.
About the Role:
As a SEN Teaching Assistant (TA), you will work closely with teachers and support staff to help students access the curriculum and develop their skills. Your role will involve assisting pupils with additional needs, including those with physical disabilities, and contributing to their overall wellbeing and progress. We welcome applicants from both educational and care backgrounds, especially those with transferable skills in supporting children with SEN.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work within the school’s resource base, which supports students with EHCPs including those with Autism, Learning Difficulties, and Speech and Language difficulties
- Support these students both in the resource base and mainstream classroom settings.
- Assist in delivering personalised learning activities and targeted interventions tailored to individual needs.
- Help develop students’ social, communication, and independence skills to promote their overall growth.
- Collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, and other professionals to ensure a coordinated approach.
- Monitor and record student progress regularly and contribute to planning meetings to review and adapt support strategies.
- Maintain a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment for all pupils.
Job Requirements:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEN, Autism, Learning Difficulties, or Speech and Language needs is desirable.
- A caring, patient, and resilient attitude with the ability to adapt to different needs
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to learn and develop professionally within the SEN sector.
- An understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
- Happy to consider candidates from the care sector who may have transferable skills gained through supporting children with SEN or physical disabilities.
- Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
