Start Date: Immediate
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent
Could you be the positive role model who transforms a young person's future? If so, GSL Education are looking for a skilled and dedicated SEN Learning Mentor to join a dynamic team in Dorchester.
The School: The school encompasses two sites in Dorchester with one common shared purpose: to provide the very best in education and support for all children who (for a variety of reasons) find themselves outside of mainstream school education. The school is an alternative provision that uses vocational and extracurricular methods to enable the students to gain functional and life skills. With a primary and secondary division, the school is inclusive of all ages and abilities and strives to give its pupils the best possible opportunities for post 16 life.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Provide 1:1 and small group mentoring to students with special educational needs (SEN), helping them build confidence, emotional resilience, and motivation for learning.
- Support the delivery of vocational and extracurricular learning, ensuring pupils engage with activities that develop essential life and functional skills.
- Build trusting relationships with students, offering consistent encouragement and guidance tailored to each learner’s emotional and educational needs.
- Help students overcome barriers to learning by addressing social, behavioural, or emotional difficulties in a calm and constructive manner.
- Collaborate with teachers, SEN coordinators, and pastoral staff to create and maintain personalised support plans and monitor progress.
- Encourage positive attitudes towards learning, preparing students for successful transitions into post-16 education, training, or employment.
Candidate Expectations:
- Experience supporting children or young people with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs or SEN, particularly those outside mainstream education.
- A compassionate, patient, and resilient approach, with the ability to build trust and rapport with pupils facing emotional or behavioural challenges.
- Understanding of alternative provision and vocational education, and a willingness to support hands-on, practical learning alongside academic development.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration with teaching staff, therapists, and external agencies.
- Ability to model positive behaviour and coping strategies, helping students develop life skills, emotional regulation, and a sense of purpose.
- Commitment to inclusive education, respecting diversity and supporting students from varied backgrounds to reach their potential in a nurturing environment.
- Have an updated CV and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
