Make a difference in SEN education

Are you passionate about supporting children and young people to overcome challenges, build confidence and reach their potential?

GSL Education is seeking a compassionate, resilient and enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant to work at a special school in Scarborough.

You do not need to have previously worked as a Teaching Assistant to be considered. We welcome applicants with relevant transferable experience from care, support work, youth work, mental health, childcare, sports coaching, mentoring or other roles where you have supported people with additional needs.

If you are patient, adaptable and motivated to help young people succeed, this could be an excellent opportunity to develop your career in special educational needs education.

About the role

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Support pupils with a range of special educational needs to access learning and participate in school life.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils and encourage their confidence and independence.
  • Support pupils with communication, social interaction, emotional regulation and behaviour where required.
  • Adapt activities and approaches to meet individual needs.
  • Work alongside teachers and other support staff to create a safe, inclusive learning environment.
  • Encourage positive behaviour, engagement and personal development.
  • Follow individual support plans, school policies and safeguarding procedures.

Who we're looking for

We are interested in your skills, attitude and experience, not just your previous job title.

  • You may be suitable if you have experience in:
  • Care or support work: supporting people with disabilities, additional needs or emotional challenges.
  • Mental health support: helping people manage emotions, develop coping strategies or build confidence.
  • Youth work or mentoring: building relationships, setting boundaries and encouraging positive choices.
  • Childcare or early years: supporting development, communication and behaviour.
  • Sports coaching or activity leadership: adapting activities, motivating individuals and promoting teamwork.
  • Education or tutoring: helping learners overcome barriers and develop new skills.
  • Personal or family caring responsibilities: where you have developed relevant skills supporting someone with additional needs.

You will bring patience, resilience, empathy, reliability and a willingness to learn. You should be comfortable responding calmly to challenging situations and adapting your approach to different pupils.

Previous SEN school experience is beneficial but relevant transferable experience will also be considered.

Why work with GSL Education?

  • Competitive pay, with details provided during the application process.
  • Dedicated support from an experienced education consultant.
  • Opportunities to develop your skills in SEN education.
  • Ongoing guidance throughout your placement.
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful difference to young people's lives.
