Are you passionate about helping primary-aged children overcome barriers to learning and feel more confident in school? A supportive primary setting in Doncaster is seeking dedicated SEMH Support Staff to help pupils manage their emotions, develop positive relationships and engage with education.

About the Role:

As an SEMH Support Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and other school staff to support children with social, emotional and mental health needs. You will help pupils manage challenging emotions, develop coping strategies and build the confidence needed to participate in classroom activities. Through consistent encouragement and tailored support, you will help create a safe, structured environment where children can make progress at their own pace.

This role would suit someone who is patient, resilient and committed to understanding the individual needs of primary-aged pupils, particularly those who may find mainstream classroom routines challenging.

About the School:

The primary setting is committed to providing an inclusive and nurturing learning environment where children's emotional wellbeing is valued alongside their academic development. Staff work collaboratively to provide consistent support, encourage positive behaviour and help pupils build the skills they need to thrive in school.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and small-group support to primary-aged pupils with SEMH needs.

  • Help children recognise and manage their emotions using appropriate strategies.

  • Encourage positive behaviour, social interaction and engagement in learning.

  • Work alongside class teachers to adapt activities and support individual learning needs.

  • Build trusting relationships with pupils while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries.

  • Support children during transitions and potentially challenging situations throughout the school day.

  • Monitor progress and share relevant observations with teachers and other staff.

  • Follow safeguarding procedures and promote pupils' safety and wellbeing.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience supporting children with social, emotional or mental health needs is desirable.

  • Experience working in a primary school, SEN setting or a similar support role is advantageous.

  • A calm, patient and resilient approach when managing challenging behaviour.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive professional relationships.

  • Confidence supporting children's emotional regulation and individual needs.

  • The ability to work collaboratively with teachers and other professionals.

  • A genuine commitment to helping children develop confidence, independence and positive learning behaviours.

If you are passionate about supporting primary-aged children and helping them overcome barriers to education, we encourage you to apply.
