Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Sheffield
Salary: £460 – £600 per week (depending on experience and qualifications)
Contract Type: Long-term / Temporary, Full-time / Part-time

Are you passionate about supporting young people with social, emotional and mental health needs? A supportive secondary school in Sheffield is looking for a caring and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team.

About the Role:

As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will provide practical and emotional support to students who may experience challenges with behaviour, communication, emotional regulation or engagement with learning. You will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff, helping students manage day-to-day challenges and take positive steps towards their learning goals.

You will build trusted relationships with students while maintaining clear boundaries and a consistent approach, making this a rewarding opportunity for someone who wants to have a genuine impact in a school setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support to students with SEMH needs.

  • Help students manage emotions, behaviour and barriers to learning.

  • Support pupils to engage positively with lessons and school routines.

  • Work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to implement agreed support strategies.

  • Encourage students to develop confidence, independence and appropriate social skills.

  • Respond calmly and consistently to challenging behaviour.

  • Share relevant observations and progress with teaching and pastoral staff.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people is desirable.

  • Experience working with SEMH, behaviour or pastoral needs is advantageous.

  • A calm, patient and consistent approach.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Confidence managing challenging situations appropriately.

  • Ability to build positive professional relationships while maintaining clear boundaries.

  • A genuine commitment to supporting young people and their wellbeing.

  • Have the right to work in the UK.

  • Have an up-to-date CV with two relevant references from within the last two years.

  • Have an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service or be willing to apply for one through GSL Education.
