Job title: SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Rotherham

Salary: £460–£600 per week (depending on experience)

Start Date: ASAP

Contract Type: Long-Term/ Day-to-day, Full-Time / Part-Time

GSL Education South Yorkshire Branch are currently looking for a caring and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to work with a vibrant school in Rotherham. This role would suit someone who can provide consistent support to pupils experiencing social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs while helping them engage positively with education.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Help pupils manage emotions and develop positive coping strategies.
  • Encourage engagement with classroom activities and learning.
  • Build trusting and supportive relationships with pupils.
  • Promote positive behaviour and healthy routines.
  • Work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to support individual needs.
  • Monitor pupils' progress and communicate relevant concerns to the wider team.

Requirements for the SEMH Teaching Assistant role:

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people is desirable.
  • Experience with SEMH, behavioural needs, SEND or pastoral support would be advantageous.
  • A calm, patient and consistent approach.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with pupils who may present challenging behaviour.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Resilience and the ability to remain composed in difficult situations.
  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate on the Update Service, or willingness to apply.
  • Good understanding of safeguarding and child protection.

For younger people facing emotional or behavioural barriers, having a consistent adult around them can make a significant difference. As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you’ll have the opportunity to support students both inside and outside the classroom while helping them develop greater confidence and independence.
