Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Sheffield
Pay Rate: £460 - £600 per week (depending on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract: Full-time/ Part-time, Day-to-day/ Long-term

GSL Education South Yorkshire Branch are recruiting compassionate and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant (TA) to work with inclusive schools in Sheffield. We are seeking individuals who can support students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, build trusting relationships, and help create a structured learning environment where every learner feels understood and supported.

The Social, Emotional and Mental Health TA will work closely with teachers and pastoral teams to provide tailored classroom support, encourage emotional regulation, and help young people overcome barriers that affect their learning and wellbeing.

SEMH Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and small-group support to students with SEMH needs
  • Help learners manage emotions, build confidence, and develop positive coping strategies
  • Support classroom activities and adapt tasks to individual learning requirements
  • Apply positive behaviour management and appropriate de-escalation techniques
  • Encourage social interaction, communication, and constructive relationships
  • Monitor progress and share relevant observations with teachers and support staff

SEMH Teaching Assistant Requirements:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs is desirable
  • Understanding of social, emotional, and behavioural challenges in educational settings
  • Ability to build positive relationships while maintaining clear boundaries
  • Knowledge of behaviour management and de-escalation approaches
  • Patient, empathetic, resilient, and adaptable approach to supporting learners
  • Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)
