Job description
GSL Education are currently recruiting for a SEN Teaching Assistant to support a child with autism within a KS1 class at a primary school in Harlow.
The successful candidate will provide 1:1 support during lessons and throughout the school day, working alongside the class teacher and SENCO.
The Role
The role will involve:
- Providing 1:1 support to a KS1 pupil with autism
- Helping the child access classroom learning and activities
- Supporting the pupil with classroom routines and transitions
- Encouraging communication and positive interaction with others
- Helping the child stay focused and engaged with tasks
- Providing additional support where the pupil finds a task difficult
- Encouraging independence rather than completing tasks for the child
- Supporting positive behaviour and helping the pupil manage the school day
- Working with the class teacher and SENCO to follow the support strategies in place
- Providing support during lessons, break times and other parts of the school day where required
The role will be primarily focused on the individual pupil, but you will also be expected to work as part of the wider classroom team and support the class when appropriate.
About You
The school is looking for someone who is calm, patient and consistent and who can build a positive relationship with a primary-aged child.
Previous experience supporting children with autism or SEN would be beneficial. This could be through a school, nursery, childcare, care, support work or another relevant setting.
You do not necessarily need to have worked as a Teaching Assistant before, provided you have relevant experience and are confident working with children.
You should be:
- Patient and approachable
- Reliable and consistent
- Comfortable providing 1:1 support
- Able to follow guidance from the class teacher and SENCO
- Confident communicating with school staff
- Able to remain calm when a child is finding something difficult
- Interested in developing your experience within SEN and education
Requirements
- Experience working with children or young people
- Experience with autism/SEN is desirable
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
- Right to work in the UK
- Satisfactory references
