Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Contract Type: Temporary, Supply, Full-Time
Start Date: As Soon As Possible
Salary Scale: £92 – £115 per day (Depending on experience)

GSL Education Hull Branch are currently recruiting for a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist educational setting in York. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who can provide consistent support to young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and help them engage positively with education.
About the Role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils who may experience emotional, behavioural, and social difficulties. You will work closely with teaching and support staff to create a calm, structured environment where pupils feel safe, understood, and encouraged to make progress.
Core Responsibilities of the SEMH Teaching Assistant
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH and additional needs.
- Build positive, trusting relationships while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries.
- Support pupils with emotional regulation, confidence, resilience, communication, and social development.
- Promote positive behaviour and respond calmly and consistently to challenging situations.
- Encourage engagement with learning and help pupils develop greater independence.
- Work collaboratively with teachers and wider staff to provide consistent support and monitor pupil progress.
As the Ideal SEMH Teaching Assistant, You Should Have
- Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behavioural, or additional needs.
- Familiarity with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and an understanding of how it may affect learning and behaviour.
- A calm, patient, empathetic, and resilient approach.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- The ability to remain consistent and professional when managing challenging or changing situations.
- A genuine passion for helping young people develop confidence, resilience, and independence.
To Work with GSL Education, You Must:
- Have the right to work in the UK.
- Have an up-to-date CV with at least 2 professional references covering the last 2 years.
- Have recent experience working with children or young people.
- Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to apply for one.
