Teaching Assistant
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Contract: Full-time

Salary: £92 – £115 per day
GSL Education are currently recruiting for a Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist school in York. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience supporting pupils with SEN, SEMH and behavioural needs who is passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
The Role as a Teaching Assistant
As a Teaching Assistant, you will provide tailored support to pupils both in and outside of the classroom, helping them engage with education, develop confidence and make positive progress.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with additional needs.
- Supporting pupils with SEN, SEMH and behavioural needs.
- Helping students access lessons and complete learning activities.
- Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils.
- Supporting emotional regulation, confidence and social development.
- Using a calm and consistent approach when managing challenging behaviour.
- Adapting support and communication to meet individual pupil needs.
- Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff to support pupil progress.
- Encouraging independence, resilience and positive attitudes towards learning.
- Maintaining a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment.
The Ideal Teaching Assistant
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Previous experience working with children or young people.
- Experience supporting pupils with SEN, SEMH or challenging behaviour.
- A calm, patient and resilient approach.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- The ability to remain positive and consistent in challenging situations.
- A genuine passion for supporting young people and helping them achieve their potential.
- A willingness to work collaboratively as part of a wider school team.
Experience within a specialist school, alternative provision, youth work, care or support work setting would also be highly beneficial.
