Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Sheffield

Salary: £460 – £600 per week (depending on experience and qualifications)

Contract Type: Long-term / Temporary, Full-time / Part-time

Start Date: Immediately

Are you passionate about helping young people manage challenges and engage positively with their education? A supportive secondary school in Sheffield is looking for a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team.

About the Role:

As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will provide day-to-day support to students who may experience social, emotional and mental health difficulties. You will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to help pupils manage their emotions, remain engaged in lessons and develop positive approaches to learning. Your calm and consistent support will help students feel more confident and able to participate in school life.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support to students with SEMH needs.

  • Help students manage emotions and respond appropriately to challenging situations.

  • Support pupils to engage with lessons and complete learning activities.

  • Build positive and professional relationships with students.

  • Work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to maintain consistent support.

  • Encourage positive behaviour, confidence and greater independence.

  • Share relevant observations and feedback with teaching and pastoral teams.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people is desirable.

  • Experience working with SEMH, behavioural or pastoral needs is advantageous.

  • A calm, patient and empathetic approach.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Confidence managing challenging situations appropriately.

  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries while building positive relationships.

  • A genuine commitment to supporting young people's wellbeing and education.

To work with GSL Education as a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you should:

  • Have the right to work in the UK.

  • Have an up-to-date CV with two relevant references from within the last two years.

  • Have an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service or be willing to apply for one through GSL Education.

Please be advised that this role requires a strong knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection and that successful applicants must satisfy all background safer recruitment checks including providing an enhanced DBS certificate registered on the update service, or completing an application for a new check.
