Behaviour Mentor - Teaching Assistant - Learning Support Assistant - SEN - SEMH - Education and Training

Position: Behaviour Mentor / Teaching Assistant
Location: Southend
Salary Scale: £93 - £120 a day (Depending on Experience)
Contract Type: Full-time

As a Behaviour Mentor, you will play a key role in supporting students who may experience behavioural, emotional and social difficulties within a school environment. You will build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, helping them to manage their behaviour, develop emotional regulation and engage positively with education.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience working with SEN, SEMH, challenging behaviour, ADHD, ASC or complex needs who is confident remaining calm, consistent and supportive in challenging situations.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to students with behavioural, emotional and additional needs.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils, acting as a consistent and positive role model.
  • Support students with emotional regulation, self-management and positive behaviour choices.
  • Implement agreed behaviour management and intervention strategies consistently.
  • Use appropriate de-escalation and conflict-resolution techniques when supporting students in challenging situations.
  • Identify potential triggers and help pupils develop strategies to manage their behaviour and emotions.
  • Support pupils to re-engage with learning following incidents of dysregulation or challenging behaviour.
  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs and pastoral staff to provide consistent support.
  • Encourage students to develop confidence, independence and positive relationships with staff and peers.
  • Maintain a calm, structured and inclusive environment where students feel safe and supported.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with behavioural, emotional or additional needs is desirable.
  • Experience with SEMH, SEN, ADHD, ASC or challenging behaviour would be highly beneficial.
  • Confident using positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A calm, patient and consistent approach, particularly when dealing with challenging situations.
  • Ability to build positive relationships while maintaining clear and appropriate boundaries.
  • Initiative, resilience and a willingness to work collaboratively with school staff.
