Could you combine your sporting skills with a passion for helping students with their day to day learning activities?

GSL Education South Yorkshire Branch are currently seeking a supportive and enthusiastic Sports Coach (Learning Support) to work with a dynamic school in Sheffield. This role is not solely focused on sports coaching; you will also provide learning and pastoral support to pupils who may need additional encouragement, structure or assistance to engage successfully in school.

Your role as a Sports Coach (Learning Support):

  • Use sport and physical activity to encourage pupil engagement and participation.
  • Provide learning support to pupils who may have additional educational, behavioural or social needs.
  • Assist pupils with classroom tasks and encourage them to remain focused on learning.
  • Use sporting activities to develop communication, teamwork, confidence and social skills.
  • Support pupils who may struggle with motivation, behaviour or emotional regulation.
  • Adapt activities and your approach according to individual learning needs.
  • Work alongside teachers, SEN staff and pastoral teams to provide consistent pupil support.
  • Encourage independence and positive attitudes towards learning.
  • Help maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive environment both inside and outside the classroom.
  •

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people is desirable.
  • Experience in sports coaching, learning support, SEN, SEMH, behaviour support, education or youth work would be beneficial.
  • As a Sports Coach (Learning Support), a genuine interest in using sport as a tool to support learning and pupil development is encouraged.
  • Understanding of the challenges pupils with additional needs may face in a school environment.
  • Patient, adaptable and encouraging approach when supporting individual pupils.
  • Ability to build positive relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work alongside teachers and support staff.
  • Confidence supporting pupils with behaviour, engagement or learning difficulties.
  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate on the Update Service, or willingness to apply.

The position as a Sports Coach (Learning Support) combines two important areas of school support: physical activity and learning development. You’ll have the opportunity to use your coaching experience to engage pupils who may find traditional classroom learning challenging, while helping them develop the confidence and skills they need to participate more positively.
