Job title: SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Rotherham

Salary: £460–£600 per week (depending on experience)

Start Date: ASAP

Contract Type: Long-Term/ Day-to-day, Full-Time / Part-Time

Could you provide the patience, consistency and encouragement needed to help pupils overcome barriers to learning?

GSL Education South Yorkshire Branch are currently seeking a caring and resilient Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Teaching Assistant to work with an amazing school in Rotherham. This role would suit someone who can build trusting relationships with pupils and provide consistent support to help them engage positively with education.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Help pupils manage emotions and develop positive coping strategies.
  • Encourage engagement with classroom activities and learning.
  • Support pupils who may experience anxiety, frustration or challenging behaviour.
  • Promote positive social interaction and communication.
  • Work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to support individual needs.
  • Encourage independence, confidence and positive behaviour.

Requirements for the SEMH Teaching Assistant role:

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people is desirable.
  • Experience working with SEMH, SEN, behaviour or pastoral support would be beneficial.
  • Patient, calm and consistent approach.
  • Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Strong communication and emotional awareness.
  • Confidence supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviour.
  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate on the Update Service, or willingness to apply.
  • Good understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
