Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Sheffield
Pay Rate: £460 - £600 per week (depending on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract: Full-time/ Part-time, Day-to-day/ Long-term

GSL Education South Yorkshire Branch are seeking resilient and supportive SEMH Teaching Assistant (TA) to work with inclusive schools in Sheffield. We are looking for individuals who can develop trusting relationships, respond appropriately to emotional and behavioural challenges, and help students feel more secure and confident within their learning environment.

As an SEMH TA, you will support learners with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, providing targeted assistance that promotes emotional regulation, positive engagement, and greater independence.

SEMH Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support according to individual SEMH needs
  • Help young people recognise emotions and develop appropriate coping strategies
  • Respond calmly to anxiety, frustration, withdrawal, or challenging behaviour
  • Reinforce routines and boundaries that provide consistency throughout the school day
  • Encourage positive participation, communication, and independent learning
  • Work closely with teachers, pastoral teams, and specialist professionals to coordinate support

SEMH Teaching Assistant Requirements:

  • Understanding of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
  • Experience in education, SEND, youth work, mentoring, or care is desirable
  • Confidence using positive behaviour management and de-escalation approaches
  • Ability to establish supportive relationships while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Patient, resilient, observant, and adaptable approach to individual needs
  • Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)
