Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Hull
Contract Type: Temporary, Supply, Full-Time
Start Date: As Soon As Possible
Salary Scale: £92 – £115 per day (Depending on experience)
Are you a patient and resilient Teaching Assistant with experience supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs? Do you have the empathy and consistency to help young people overcome barriers to learning and develop confidence in the classroom?
GSL Education Hull Branch are currently seeking an SEMH Teaching Assistant to work in a secondary school setting in Hull. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who can build positive relationships with young people while providing calm, structured and personalised support to help them engage with education.
SEMH Teaching Assistant Role:
The successful SEMH Teaching Assistant will work closely with teachers and the wider support team to help pupils manage emotional, social and behavioural challenges that may affect their learning. You will provide targeted support, encourage positive behaviour and help create a safe and inclusive environment where pupils can make meaningful progress.
SEMH Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH and additional learning needs.
- Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries.
- Support pupils to manage emotions, develop resilience and engage positively with their learning.
- Assist teachers with differentiated classroom activities and individual support strategies.
- Respond calmly and appropriately to challenging behaviour, following agreed school procedures and strategies.
- Monitor pupils’ engagement and progress and communicate relevant observations to teachers and support staff.
SEMH Teaching Assistant Requirements:
- Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behavioural or emotional needs is essential.
- Experience working within a secondary school or similar pupil-facing environment is desirable.
- Strong resilience, patience and the ability to remain calm and consistent in challenging situations.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with a nurturing and non-judgemental approach.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a wider team and follow individual support and behaviour strategies.
- An up-to-date CV covering the last 10 years with explanations for any gaps
- An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply for one.
