Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Scarborough, North Yorkshire
Contract Type: Temporary, Supply, Full-Time
Start Date: As Soon As Possible
Salary Scale: £92 – £115 per day (Depending on experience)

GSL Education Hull Branch are currently recruiting for a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist educational setting in Scarborough. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is patient, resilient, and committed to helping young people overcome barriers to learning and make positive progress.
About the Role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will provide individualised support to pupils who may experience emotional, behavioural, and social difficulties. You will work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to create a calm, structured, and nurturing environment where pupils feel supported, understood, and encouraged to engage with learning.
Core Responsibilities of the SEMH Teaching Assistant
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
- Build positive, trusting relationships while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries.
- Support pupils with emotional regulation, confidence, resilience, and social development.
- Promote positive behaviour and help pupils manage challenging or difficult situations appropriately.
- Encourage engagement with learning and support pupils to develop greater independence.
- Work collaboratively with teachers and wider staff to provide consistent support and monitor progress.
As the Ideal SEMH Teaching Assistant, You Should Have
- Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behavioural, or additional needs.
- A calm, patient, empathetic, and resilient approach.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- The ability to remain consistent and professional when managing challenging behaviour or emotional situations.
- An understanding of the importance of boundaries, safeguarding, and positive behaviour strategies.
- A genuine passion for helping young people develop confidence, resilience, and independence.
To Work with GSL Education, You Must:
- Have the right to work in the UK.
- Have an up-to-date CV with at least 2 professional references covering the last 2 years.
- Have recent experience working with children or young people.
- Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to apply for one.
