GSL Education is looking for a dedicated and approachable Pastoral Support Officer to join a supportive school in Middlesbrough. This role is ideal for someone who can build strong relationships with pupils, provide consistent pastoral guidance, and help create a positive and inclusive school environment.
About the Role
As a Pastoral Support Officer, you will work closely with pupils, teachers, pastoral teams, and senior staff to support students with their wellbeing, behaviour, attendance, engagement, and personal development.
You will play an important role in identifying barriers that may affect a pupil's progress and providing appropriate support to help them feel safe, understood, and ready to learn.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day pastoral support to pupils.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with students.
- Support pupils with behavioural, emotional, and social needs.
- Monitor and encourage positive behaviour and engagement.
- Help pupils overcome barriers to learning and attendance.
- Provide 1:1 and small-group support where appropriate.
- Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, safeguarding leads, and pastoral staff.
- Support pupils with their confidence, resilience, and personal development.
- Help manage and resolve pastoral and behavioural concerns.
- Maintain accurate records and communicate relevant information with staff.
- Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive school environment.
What We're Looking For
- Previous experience in a pastoral, education, youth work, or support role is desirable.
- Strong understanding of the challenges young people may face.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Patient, approachable, and empathetic personality.
- Confident supporting pupils with behavioural or emotional needs.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
- Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one.
