HLTA – SEN Unit | Mainstream Primary School

Location: Leicester
Salary: £100 – £120 per day, depending on experience
Contract: Full-time, long-term
Start Date: ASAP

GSL Education are currently seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join an SEN unit within a welcoming mainstream primary school in Leicester.

The unit supports children with a range of additional needs, with the majority of pupils having Autism (ASD). We are looking for someone who is confident working with children with complex needs and who can provide a calm, nurturing and structured learning environment.

The Role

As an HLTA within the SEN unit, you will play an important role in supporting pupils both academically and socially, working closely with the class teacher and wider SEN team.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the learning and development of pupils with SEN, particularly those with ASD.
  • Leading small-group and whole-class learning activities where appropriate.
  • Providing targeted 1:1 support to pupils who require additional assistance.
  • Supporting pupils with communication, social and emotional development.
  • Helping to implement individual learning plans and behaviour strategies.
  • Creating a calm, structured and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Working closely with teachers, SENCOs and other professionals.
  • Supporting pupils to develop their independence and confidence.
  • Managing challenging behaviour positively and consistently.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has previous experience working as an HLTA or experienced TA within a primary or SEN setting.
  • Has experience supporting children with ASD/autism and additional needs.
  • Is confident leading learning activities and working independently.
  • Has a calm, patient and nurturing approach.
  • Is confident managing behaviour using positive and consistent strategies.
  • Can build strong relationships with pupils and staff.
  • Is passionate about helping children with SEN reach their full potential.
  • Has a good understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
