Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Rotherham
Pay Rate: £460 - £600 per week (depending on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract: Full-time/ Part-time, Day-to-day/ Long-term

GSL Education South Yorkshire Branch are recruiting dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant (TA) for vibrant schools in Rotherham. We are looking for individuals who can provide consistent emotional and educational support, establish positive relationships with students, and help those facing SEMH challenges develop greater confidence and stability within the school environment.
The Social, Emotional and Mental Health Teaching Assistant will have the opportunity to work alongside teaching and pastoral teams to reduce barriers to education, promote emotional wellbeing, and help learners develop strategies for managing difficult situations more independently.
SEMH Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:
- Offer targeted one-to-one assistance based on individual social and emotional needs
- Encourage young people to recognise emotions and develop effective coping strategies
- Support learners during periods of anxiety, frustration, or disengagement
- Reinforce routines and expectations that provide consistency throughout the school day
- Record relevant changes in wellbeing, behaviour, and classroom participation
- Liaise with teachers, pastoral colleagues, and specialist professionals to coordinate support
SEMH Teaching Assistant Requirements:
- Understanding of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs within education
- Background in SEND, schools, care, mentoring, or youth services is advantageous
- Ability to respond calmly and appropriately when faced with challenging situations
- Confidence developing trusting relationships while maintaining professional boundaries
- Strong communication skills with an empathetic, consistent, and adaptable approach
- Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)
