Cover Supervisor – Middlesbrough

Location: Middlesbrough
Salary: £90–£120 per day, dependent on experience
Start Date: September 2026
Contract Type: Full-Time / Flexible

A welcoming and supportive secondary school in Middlesbrough is seeking an experienced Cover Supervisor to join their team. The successful candidate will have previous experience working within a UK school setting and will be confident supervising pupils, delivering pre-planned lessons and maintaining a positive learning environment in the absence of the regular class teacher.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Cover Supervisor who understands the expectations of the UK education system and can confidently support pupils across different secondary year groups and subjects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise classes in the absence of the regular teacher, ensuring pupils remain engaged with pre-planned learning activities.

  • Deliver lesson instructions and learning resources provided by teaching staff.

  • Maintain a positive, calm and orderly classroom environment.

  • Manage classroom behaviour in line with school policies and procedures.

  • Support pupils with their learning and respond to questions appropriately.

  • Ensure pupils complete assigned work and remain focused throughout lessons.

  • Take accurate class registers and report any concerns to relevant staff.

  • Provide support across a range of secondary subjects and year groups.

  • Build positive and professional relationships with pupils and staff.

  • Support pupils with additional learning needs where required.

  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff and the wider school team.

  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety and school policies at all times.

The Ideal Cover Supervisor Will Have

  • Previous experience working in a UK school setting is essential.

  • Experience working as a Cover Supervisor, Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or in a similar educational role.

  • A good understanding of the UK secondary school curriculum and classroom expectations.

  • Confidence supervising classes independently across different subjects.

  • Strong behaviour-management and classroom-management skills.

  • The ability to follow and deliver pre-planned lessons effectively.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • A calm, confident and adaptable approach.

  • Experience supporting pupils with SEND, SEMH or additional learning needs would be advantageous.

  • Familiarity with school systems and procedures would be beneficial.

  • Experience using the Arbor School Management Information System (MIS) would be highly advantageous.

  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.

  • A fully checkable employment and reference history.
