Graduate Teaching Assistant – Secondary – Middlesbrough

Location: Middlesbrough
Salary: £90–£120 per day, dependent on experience
Start Date: September 2026
Contract Type: Full-Time / Flexible

A welcoming and supportive secondary school in Middlesbrough is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Graduate Teaching Assistant to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate looking to gain valuable classroom experience, develop their educational skills and make a positive difference to the lives of secondary school pupils.

As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and support staff to assist with classroom learning, provide 1:1 and small-group support, and help pupils develop their academic, social and emotional skills. This role could also provide valuable experience for graduates considering a future career in teaching, education, psychology or youth work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support teachers with classroom activities and lesson preparation across secondary year groups.

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils who require additional assistance.

  • Assist pupils with literacy, numeracy and subject-specific learning.

  • Support pupils with SEND, ASD, ADHD and SEMH needs.

  • Help deliver targeted learning activities and interventions.

  • Encourage positive behaviour, engagement and participation in lessons.

  • Support pupils in developing confidence, independence and effective learning habits.

  • Assist pupils who experience barriers to learning or behaviours that challenge.

  • Build positive and professional relationships with pupils.

  • Support classroom organisation and the preparation of learning resources.

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs and pastoral teams.

  • Maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

The Ideal Graduate Teaching Assistant Will Have

  • A degree in any subject; a relevant degree in Education, Psychology, English, Maths, Science or a related subject would be advantageous.

  • A genuine interest in working with secondary school pupils.

  • Previous experience working with children or young people through tutoring, mentoring, volunteering, coaching or employment.

  • Strong communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.

  • A patient, enthusiastic and adaptable approach.

  • Confidence supporting pupils on a 1:1 and small-group basis.

  • An interest in supporting pupils with SEND, SEMH or additional learning needs.

  • The ability to build positive relationships and encourage pupil engagement.

  • Experience supporting behaviour or pupils with behaviours that challenge would be beneficial.

  • A willingness to learn and develop within a school environment.

  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.

  • A fully checkable employment and reference history.
