Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Scarborough, North Yorkshire
Contract Type: Temporary, Supply, Part-Time, Full-Time
Start Date: As Soon As Possible
Salary Scale: £92 – £115 per day (Depending on experience)
Are you patient, resilient, and passionate about helping young people overcome social, emotional, and mental health barriers to learning? GSL Education Hull Branch are currently recruiting a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to support pupils in an educational setting in Scarborough.
This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who can build trusting relationships with pupils, provide consistent support, and help create a calm and structured environment where young people can feel safe, understood, and ready to engage with learning.
Main Responsibilities:
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries.
- Support pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour, communication, and social development.
- Respond calmly to challenging situations and use appropriate de-escalation and positive behaviour strategies.
- Work closely with teachers and wider support staff to implement individual support strategies and monitor progress.
- Encourage pupils to engage with learning and develop confidence, independence, and positive relationships.
Minimum Requirements:
- Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behavioural, pastoral, or additional needs is desirable.
- Experience in a school, youth work, care, mentoring, or similar support environment would be advantageous.
- A calm, patient, empathetic, and resilient approach when working with challenging or unpredictable situations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive relationships with pupils.
- A genuine commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare and development of children and young people.
- An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one.
