Job Title: Teaching Assistant (Secondary)

Location: Barnsley

Salary: £460 – £600 per week (depending on experience and qualifications)

Contract Type: Long-term / Temporary, Full-time / Part-time

Start Date: Immediately

Are you passionate about helping secondary-age pupils build confidence and make progress in their learning? A supportive secondary school in Barnsley is looking for a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join its team.

About the Role:

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work alongside subject teachers across Key Stages 3 and 4, providing classroom support and helping pupils stay focused and engaged. You may support individual pupils or small groups, assist with lesson activities and help students manage the demands of secondary education, including preparation for GCSEs where appropriate. Your support will help create a positive learning experience for pupils throughout the school day.

Responsibilities:

  • Support pupils across Key Stages 3 and 4 with their learning.

  • Work alongside subject teachers to provide effective classroom assistance.

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support where required.

  • Help pupils remain focused and engaged during lessons.

  • Support lesson transitions and promote positive behaviour.

  • Assist pupils who may require additional SEN or pastoral support.

  • Encourage pupils to develop confidence and independence in their learning.

  • Share relevant observations and feedback with teachers and other staff.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people is desirable.

  • Experience supporting pupils in a secondary school or similar setting is advantageous.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • A patient, calm and encouraging approach.

  • Confidence supporting pupils with different learning and behavioural needs.

  • Ability to work effectively alongside subject teachers and wider school staff.

  • A genuine commitment to helping young people achieve their potential.

To work with GSL Education as a Teaching Assistant (Secondary), you should:

  • Have the right to work in the UK.

  • Have an up-to-date CV with two relevant references from within the last two years.

  • Have an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service or be willing to apply for one through GSL Education.

Please be advised that this role requires a strong knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection and that successful applicants must satisfy all background safer recruitment checks including providing an enhanced DBS certificate registered on the update service, or completing an application for a new check.
