SEN Teaching Assistant – Tameside
Location: Tameside
Salary: £95–£120 per day

Are you an experienced and confident SEN Teaching Assistant looking for an opportunity to make a real difference to children with additional needs?
GSL Education Manchester Branch are currently seeking a dedicated and resilient full-time SEN Teaching Assistant to work within a KS1 Resource Base in Tameside, supporting children with a range of additional needs.
The resource base supports 13 children and is staffed by one teacher and four Teaching Assistants, providing a close-knit and supportive environment where teamwork is essential. The school is keen to meet suitable candidates next week, providing an opportunity to experience the staff team, children and environment before the placement begins.
Responsibilities of an SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA):
- Provide dedicated one-to-one and small-group support to children within the KS1 Resource Base.
- Support pupils with a range of sensory, physical, communication and additional needs.
- Assist non-verbal pupils and children experiencing communication barriers to engage with learning and daily activities.
- Support children to develop communication, independence and social skills.
- Implement individual support strategies and follow guidance from the class teacher and wider SEND team.
- Provide calm and consistent support when pupils display challenging behaviours, including hitting or biting.
- Help pupils regulate their emotions and remain engaged in activities.
- Adapt resources and activities to meet individual pupils’ needs.
- Support personal care and physical needs where required and appropriate.
- Monitor pupils’ engagement, progress and wellbeing and communicate observations to the teaching team.
- Work closely with the teacher and other Teaching Assistants to maintain a safe, positive and inclusive environment.
- Be willing to get involved and provide support wherever needed within the resource base.
Requirements of an SEN Teaching Assistant:
- Sound knowledge and experience supporting children with additional needs.
- Previous experience working with children with communication and sensory needs.
- Confidence supporting children who may be non-verbal or have significant communication barriers.
- Experience managing challenging behaviour, including hitting and biting.
- A calm, patient, resilient and compassionate approach.
- The confidence to get involved and support wherever needed.
- Ability to remain professional and composed in challenging situations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work positively as part of a close-knit and supportive team.
- A genuine commitment to supporting children with SEND and helping them achieve their potential.
- Relevant SEND, education, childcare or support-work qualifications are desirable but not essential where strong relevant experience is demonstrated.
- Enhanced DBS on the update service or willingness to apply for one.
