Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Sheffield
Salary: £460 - £600 per week (depending on experience and qualifications)
Contract Type: Long-term / Temporary, Full-time / Part-time
Start Date: Immediate start
Are you patient, understanding and passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning? A supportive secondary school in Sheffield is looking for a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to provide consistent support to pupils who may need additional help with their behaviour, emotions and engagement.
About the Role:
As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to support pupils who experience social, emotional and mental health needs. Your day may include providing one-to-one or small-group support, helping pupils regulate their emotions, encouraging positive behaviour and supporting them to remain engaged in lessons.
You will build trusting relationships with pupils while maintaining clear boundaries and a calm, consistent approach.

Responsibilities:

Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs.

Help pupils manage emotions and remain engaged in learning.

Support positive behaviour and reinforce appropriate boundaries.

Work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to implement individual support strategies.

Encourage pupils to develop confidence, independence and positive learning habits.

Monitor behaviour and progress, sharing relevant observations with staff.

Help maintain a calm, safe and structured classroom environment.
Requirements:

Previous experience supporting children or young people is desirable.

Experience working with SEMH or behavioural needs is advantageous.

A patient, calm and resilient approach.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to build positive professional relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Confidence working collaboratively with teachers and wider school staff.

Have the right to work in the UK.

Have an up-to-date CV with two relevant references from within the last two years.

Have an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service or be willing to apply for one through GSL Education.
Please be advised that this role requires a strong knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection and that successful applicants must satisfy all background safer recruitment checks including providing an enhanced DBS certificate registered on the update service, or completing an application for a new check.
