SEN Teaching Assistant

Contract: Full-time, long-term
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, term time only

GSL Education are currently recruiting for a SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist academy in Scarborough. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to develop their experience within a dedicated SEN setting and work as part of a supportive and experienced team.
About the School
The school is a specialist academy supporting children and young people aged 2–16, with pupils who have a range of complex and additional needs. The school takes a highly individualised approach to education, recognising that every pupil has different strengths, needs and aspirations.
The curriculum is designed around each pupil's individual starting point, with a strong emphasis on communication, cognition, sensory development and independence. Pupils are supported to develop skills that can be transferred into real-life situations, helping them become increasingly confident and independent.

Staff work collaboratively to ensure pupils receive the right support and are able to make progress both academically and personally.
The Role
As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and other specialist staff to support pupils throughout the school day.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with additional needs.
- Supporting pupils to access an individualised curriculum.
- Building strong, positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
- Supporting communication, interaction and social development.
- Encouraging pupils to develop greater independence.
- Supporting sensory and emotional regulation needs.
- Assisting with classroom activities and practical learning.
- Reinforcing learning and supporting pupils to transfer skills into everyday situations.
- Providing a calm, consistent and nurturing presence.
- Working closely with teachers and other professionals to ensure pupils receive consistent support.
- Supporting pupils' personal, social and emotional development.

- Able to build positive relationships with pupils.
- Confident adapting their communication and support to individual needs.
- Comfortable working as part of a wider team.
- Committed to helping pupils develop their confidence and independence.
- Willing to learn and develop their knowledge of specialist SEN strategies.
Previous experience working with SEN, Autism, complex needs, learning difficulties, sensory needs, communication difficulties or challenging behaviour would be highly beneficial.
We would also welcome applications from candidates with transferable experience in care, youth work, support work, healthcare, sports coaching or similar roles who have the right attitude and a genuine passion for supporting young people.
