Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Rotherham
Pay Rate: £460 - £600 per week (depending on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract: Full-time/ Part-time, Day-to-day/ Long-term

GSL Education are supporting schools throughout Rotherham in their search for patient and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant (TA). We are looking for individuals who can recognise the needs behind a student’s behaviour, establish trusting relationships, and provide consistent support that enables learners to feel secure and re-engage with education.
As SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work with pupils who have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, providing individualised support that promotes emotional regulation, positive behaviour, and greater participation in learning.
SEMH Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:
- Establish trusting relationships with pupils who require additional emotional and behavioural support
- Recognise signs of distress or disengagement and respond using appropriate strategies
- Deliver targeted one-to-one activities designed around individual SEMH needs
- Model positive communication and constructive ways of managing difficult emotions
- Track changes in wellbeing, behaviour, and classroom participation
- Liaise with teachers, pastoral teams, and specialist staff to maintain consistent support
SEMH Teaching Assistant Requirements:
- Familiarity with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and their impact on education
- Experience supporting young people with emotional, behavioural, or additional needs
- Ability to respond sensitively and calmly when situations become challenging
- Confidence establishing appropriate boundaries while maintaining positive relationships
- Strong observation, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)
