Contract Type: Temporary, Supply, Part-Time, Full-Time
Start Date: September 2026
Salary Scale: £92 – £115 per day (Depending on experience)

GSL Education are currently recruiting for a resilient, patient, and compassionate Autism Support Assistant to work within a specialist secondary educational setting in York.
This is a rewarding opportunity for someone with experience supporting young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) who understands the importance of consistency, clear communication, and individualised support. You will work alongside teaching and support staff to help students navigate the school day, participate in learning, and develop greater independence.
About the Role:
As an Autism Support Assistant, you will provide tailored support to secondary-aged learners with ASC profiles, helping them access lessons and manage different aspects of the school environment. You will use appropriate strategies to support communication, emotional regulation, sensory needs, and positive engagement while maintaining clear and consistent expectations.
Key Responsibilities of the Autism Support Assistant:
- Provide individual and small-group support to students with ASC profiles across the school day
- Help learners access classroom activities by using clear, consistent, and appropriate communication strategies
- Support students with emotional regulation, sensory needs, transitions, and changes in routine
- Encourage independence, confidence, positive relationships, and active participation in learning
- Work closely with teachers and support staff to implement personalised strategies and approaches
- Maintain a calm, structured, and inclusive environment that supports students' wellbeing and development
As the Ideal Autism Support Assistant, You Should Have:
- Previous experience supporting children or young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- A good understanding of autism, including communication differences, sensory needs, and individual support requirements
- A resilient, patient, and adaptable approach when working with students with diverse needs
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Ability to remain calm, consistent, and professional when faced with challenging situations
- A genuine passion for helping autistic young people develop confidence, independence, and positive learning experiences
To Work with GSL Education, You Must:
- Have the right to work in the UK
- Provide an up-to-date CV with relevant reference information covering the last 2 years
- Have recent experience working with children or young people, preferably within an SEND or specialist setting
- Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to apply for one
