Job Title: SEN Teaching Assistant
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Contract Type: Temporary, Supply, Part-Time, Full-Time
Start Date: September 2026
Salary Scale: £92 – £115 per day (Depending on experience)
Are you a resilient and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant with experience supporting young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)? Do you have the patience, understanding, and adaptability to respond to individual needs and help students overcome barriers to learning?
GSL Education Hull branch are currently hiring a committed SEN Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist secondary educational setting in York. We are looking for a confident and resilient individual who is familiar with different ASC profiles and understands the importance of providing consistent, personalised support to students with additional needs.
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and specialist support staff to provide tailored one-to-one and small-group support. You will help students access learning, develop communication and social skills, build independence, and manage the challenges they may experience within an educational environment.
Main Responsibilities as an SEN Teaching Assistant:
- Provide personalised one-to-one and small-group support for students with SEN, including pupils with a range of ASC profiles.
- Adapt learning activities, communication approaches, and classroom support to meet individual needs.
- Promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation, confidence, and independence through consistent support.
- Build trusting relationships with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries and high expectations.
- Work closely with teachers and SEND staff to implement individual support strategies and monitor student progress.
- Help maintain a calm, structured, safe, and inclusive learning environment where students can engage successfully.
SEN Teaching Assistant Minimum Requirements:
- Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEN, particularly Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with different ASC profiles and an understanding of how autism can affect communication, behaviour, sensory processing, and learning.
- A resilient, patient, and adaptable approach when supporting students with diverse and sometimes complex needs.
- Strong communication, relationship-building, and teamwork skills.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one).
