SEN Teaching Assistant

Location: Middlesbrough
Salary: £90–£120 per day (dependent on experience)
Start Date: September 2026
Contract Type: Full-Time / Flexible

A welcoming and inclusive school in Middlesbrough is seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join their team. This SEN Teaching Assistant role is ideal for someone passionate about supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs and helping them achieve their full potential in a safe, nurturing and engaging environment.

The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will work closely with teachers, the SENCO and wider support staff to provide tailored support for pupils with a range of additional needs, including ASD, ADHD, SEMH and learning difficulties. As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will provide 1:1 and small-group support, helping pupils build confidence, independence and positive relationships while remaining engaged with their education.

Key Responsibilities of the SEN Teaching Assistant:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEN.

  • Supporting pupils with ASD, ADHD, SEMH and additional learning needs.

  • Implementing individual support plans and targeted interventions.

  • Promoting positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing and engagement.

  • Supporting pupils with their academic, social and emotional development.

  • Using appropriate behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.

  • Adapting learning resources to meet individual pupil needs.

  • Working closely with teachers, the SENCO and wider support staff.

  • Helping to maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

The Ideal SEN Teaching Assistant Will:

  • Have previous experience working with children or young people with SEN.

  • Have experience supporting pupils with additional learning or behavioural needs.

  • Be patient, caring, resilient and adaptable.

  • Have strong communication and relationship-building skills.

  • Be confident supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups.

  • Experience with ASD, ADHD, SEMH or behaviours that challenge would be highly advantageous.

  • Previous SEN Teaching Assistant or HLTA experience would be an added advantage.

  • Hold an enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or be willing to apply).

  • Have a fully checkable work history.
