Job Title: Autism Support Worker
Location: Newcastle
Pay Rate: £90 - £120 per day (depending on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract: Full-time/ Part-time, Day-to-day/ Long-term

Can you provide patient, consistent support that helps autistic pupils feel understood, confident, and ready to learn?

GSL Education Newcastle Branch are seeking dedicated Autism Support Workers to work with pupils in schools across Newcastle. This role is suited to individuals who understand that every autistic pupil has individual strengths, communication preferences, and support needs. Working alongside teachers and SEN staff, you will help pupils access learning, navigate daily routines, and develop greater confidence and independence within the school environment.

The Autism Support Worker is going to provide individualised support that promotes communication, emotional regulation, social development, and meaningful participation in learning and school life.

Autism Support Worker Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual support based on each pupil's communication, sensory, and learning needs
  • Use visual aids, structured routines, and clear instructions to make daily activities more accessible
  • Help pupils manage transitions between lessons, activities, and different school environments
  • Recognise signs of sensory overload or distress and respond using appropriate support strategies
  • Encourage communication, social interaction, and independence without placing unnecessary pressure on pupils
  • Share observations with teachers and SEN staff to help maintain consistent approaches to individual support

Autism Support Worker Requirements:

  • Experience supporting autistic children or young people in education, care, or community settings
  • Understanding of autism and how individual needs can affect communication, learning, and sensory processing
  • Patient and observant approach with the ability to respond calmly to individual needs
  • Ability to follow personalised support plans and established school routines
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills with a commitment to inclusive practice
  • Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)
